2009 was a big year for mixtapes. With record label budgets shrinking consistently, most artists (both aspiring and established) have been left desperate for album release dates. The game is changing, but the show must go on. Utilizing the concept of free music as promotion, numerous artists have been able to launch successful careers through the avenue of the mixtape. What's different now is that the mixtape is less about the mix, more about the music. If you don't believe us just notice the value of the "No DJ" versions of these mixtape cuts. We obviously still love the DJ, but 2009 was the year of the "free album", which is the recurring theme of our list. This year we decided to partner up with our sister site, The Over Feed and compile a list of the 10 best mixtapes of the year. In the past, we at Get Right Music have always put together an un-ranked list of the top 10 tapes from the year, but this year we're taking it to the next level and ranking them in order. I know the comments will be heavy, but we're standing by our list. We put in hours of time debating, arguing and fighting over who deserved what spot on the list. The result is the 10 best mixtapes based on the criteria of quality, originality, and impact. Over the next few days we will be leaking the list backwards starting with number 10 and working our way up to the number 1 mixtape of the year. Enjoy, and thank you for making Get Right Music one of the best mixtape websites on the net. We do it for you.
