The Top 10 Mixtapes Of 2008
December 9, 2008
I would like to start this post off by saying thank you to all the proud and faithful supporters of GetRightMusic.com. I started this website in the middle of 2006 and we have quickly grown into a force to reckoned with. The reason I started this site was to simply spread my love for mixtapes and music to other like-minded fans. Get Right Music is all about quality and premium mixtapes. We only provide the best in mixtape releases and only post what we feel is worth the download and your time. To quote Styles P, “Time is Money.” Moving on, 2008 was a big year for mixtapes and hence for Get Right Music. I decided that to close out this great year, it would be nice to compile a list of 10 mixtapes that were released in ‘08 that I feel every hip hop fan should have in their library. Without taking any more of your valuable time, below is the list of what we feel were the most “notable” mixtapes of the past year. Enjoy. Oh, and Get Right…
(The mixtapes are in no particular order)
Number 1. Wale – “The Mixtape About Nothing”

This is arguably the mixtape that put Wale on. The Seinfeld inspired tape mixed by Nick Catchdubs and sponsored by clothing company 10 Deep highlights this Washington D.C. native’s lyrical talent. Wale stepped on the scene and has managed to blend the sound of D.C.’s go-go music with hip-hop beats and then iced the cake with his unique flow and lyrics. A dope new artist that will be making some noise for a while. Download “The Mixtape About Nothing” Here.
Number 2.  Asher Roth – “The Greenhouse Effect”

The newest white rapper on the scene has taken over, officially. Asher’s first release was hosted by mixtape masterminds Dj Drama and Don Cannon. The mixtape is unique in that it features Roth rhyming over well-known hip hop instrumentals and remixing them to a degree. This doesn’t take anything away from the tape and Asher has managed to make most of these tracks better than the originals. Numerous A&R’s and label executives have been co-signing this guy from day one. He will definitely be someone you will hear more from in 2009. Download “The Greenhouse Effect” Here.
Number 3.  Bishop Lamont – “The Confessional”

Bishop Lamont really secured his presence, not only on the west coast, but nationwide; with this mixtape here. Mixed by the G-Unit dj, Dj Whoo Kid. The mixtape features all new music from the California artist. With numerous Dr. Dre produced songs and featuring verses from artists like Busta Rhymes, Warren G and Ras Kass. This mixtape is better than most of the studio albums that have been released in 2008, and that is still with Whoo Kid’s drops here and there. Bishop Lamont supposedly has been an integral part in Dr. Dre’s long-awaited Detox album, and hopefully we will here some more music like this from him in the new year. Download “The Confessional” Here.
Number 4.  Nas – “The N*gger Tape”

Before Nas released his 2008 studio album “Untitled,” he dropped this mixtape with Dj Green Lantern allowing him to still use the title that he wanted his album to be called, before the label suits stepped in and told him forget about it. The mixtape features some great audio ad-libs as well as some exclusive freestyles and remixes from the classic Queens Bridge artist. Some people have said they enjoy listening to this mixtape more than the album. You can be the judge. I like mixtapes. Download “The N*gger Tape” Here.
Number 5.  Izza Kizza – “Kizzaland”

Izza Kizza is one of Timbaland’s newest signee’s. Nobody really ever heard that much of this artist until this mixtape released. Izza’s style is very unique and at the same time very catchy. Oh, and it’s mixed by Nick Catchdubs, who seems to have a golden touch this year with mixtapes. Izza Kizza’s premier mixtape is a great listen and I will guarantee numerous listens. He recently landed his music on HBO’s show Entourage. We will hear more from this artist, quote me on that. Download “Kizzaland” Here.
Number 6.  Mick Boogie & Terry Urban – “Viva La Hova”

Mick Boogie is not just a mixtape dj. He is a mixtape producer/composer/director/dj… He has one of the most creative minds when it comes to putting together tapes. He is also one of the hardest working dj’s out right now. We could have made a top ten list just for Mick Boogie in 2008. This one here is a mixtape mash-up of Coldplay and Jay-Z. What Mick did was recruit some of the best up and coming hip hop beat makers, told them to re-create some Coldplay tracks with a hip hop feel, then Mick and his team put Jay-Z accapellas on top and mixed it all up into an amazing tape that in my opinion is far better than The Grey Album or anything else like it. Viva La Boogie… Download “Viva La Hova” Here.
Number 7. Â Travis Barker & Dj AM – “Fix Your Face”

It was truly a tragedy a few months ago when Dj AM and Travis Barker were in a near death plane crash that did kill everyone else in the small private jet. This mixtape was put together before the accident and is basically a tape of what the two have been doing together on tours. The duo have been taking over the nightclub scene from LA to Tokyo by mashing up live drums from Barker with Dj AM’s extraordinary eclectic dj sets. Dj AM spins the music and Travis Barker gives it a live feel by playing drums along. Play this at your next house party and you will see why this made the list. Download “Fix Your Face” Here.
Number 8.  Cookin’ Soul – “Night of the Living Dead”

Cookin’ Soul has been cookin’ some serious beats in 2008. The trio of producers and dj’s from Spain released this mixtape with the help of Dj Whoo Kid around Halloween time. The beats are all dark and eerie and just prove Cookin’ Soul’s talent to make theme music. The mixtape features original beats done by Cookin’ Soul with verses from the late great Notorious B.I.G. Each song also features verses from some of the best artists from our time, like Jay-Z, Eminem, 50 Cent, Snoop, Big Pun, Scarface, and more. This tape is some of the best Biggie Smalls blends I have ever heard. Cookin’ Soul better be cookin’ up some big deals soon. Download “Night of the Living Dead” Here.
Number 9.  The Clipse – “Road to Till The Casket Drops”

The Clipse have been busy all year working on their new clothing line Play Clothes. This mixtape is a promotion for the line as well as sort of a re-introduction to the music of The Clipse. The Virginia duo has what it takes and this mixtape proves it in every aspect. Featuring remixes over well-known instrumentals, The Clipse make it seem easy, and make it sound better than the rest. Look out for more new music from the Pharrell backed rappers in 2009. Download “Road to Till The Casket Drops” Here.
Number 10.  KiD CuDi – “A KiD Named CuDi”

KiD CuDi released this mixtape with the help of Plain Pat his Dj and 10 Deep the clothing line. That’s 2 on the list for 10 Deep. KiD CuDi is out of Cleveland, Ohio and after this mixtape he got signed by Kanye West and is one of the only 4 artists featured on Kanye’s latest studio album “808’s and Heartbreaks.” KiD CuDi is most known for his hit single “Day and Night,” which is truly a hit and is what the mixtape basically revolves around. The mixtape showcases CuDi’s talent as an extremely versatile artist that will be able to survive in this industry. This will probably become a collectors item in the years to come. Download “A KiD Named CuDi” Here.
So there it is. The GetRightMusic.com “Top 10 Mixtapes of 2008″ list. Now, we all know there were some other great releases that came out in 2008. These mixtapes listed above are all critical mixtapes in my eyes and will probably be looked back upon as collector items and tapes that got some of these artists put on. Not all of these tapes are from up-and-comers, but a majority of them are, and they all deserve the spotlight for the hard work that they put in producing these mixtapes and allowing us, the fans, to download them for free and enjoy them. Please support your artists when they release studio albums or when they go on tour. Thank you for taking the time to read this list and thank you for supporting the best site on the internet for free hip hop mixtape downloads. Feel free to comment and put in any mixtapes that you feel should have made the list. Remember, if it’s not here, it’s not worth the download. Get Right…
